Things to do, places to go
Do you love cycling? Cruising on flat paths in your wheelchair?
If you enjoy cycling then a lovely bike path to take from 100 Hitchcock is along the Barwon River. Flat, safe riding. Perfectly suited bikes, strollers and wheelchairs. The path follows the meandering river, through nature reserve and farmland. Its so peaceful and a hidden treasure mostly only the locals know about. For the more serious cyclists amongst you then the road that follows along the thirteenth beach is the place to ride. A gentle undulating road running parallel to the surf. You may even spot Cadel Evans, a long time resident of Barwon Heads along the route.
Barwon Heads is located in the Bellarine Peninsula, near the start of The Great Ocean Road tour. It’s an ideal place to stay for short trips to Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Torquay, Anglesea, Portarlington, and Aireys Inlet all around 15 to 30 mins drive from Barwon Heads. A lovely day trip that I highly recommend, is to hop on the ferry at Queenscliff. Within 20 minutes you arrive at Sorrento. Extend your morning trip and visit Cape Schanck. The views are just gorgeous!
There are gorgeous beaches (we particularly love Thirteenth Beach and Ocean Grove) for surfing. The Barwon Heads tidal river is ideal for young children to paddle and play (2 blocks from home).
If you are looking for a dining experience to remember, why not book Brae Restaurant at Birregurra. It’s about a 30-minute drive and is outstanding, as well as very memorable. No wonder it is rated one of the top restaurants in Australia and the world.

Grant's place is a beautiful home with spaciousness, natural light and lovely decor. The location is perfect, close to shops, cafes, the beach and parks but no noise issues. The wheelchair-friendly nature of this property is well thought out, considerate and stylish. Grant and Kerry responded quickly and warmly and have a local contact who was also fantastic. I feel honoured to have been able to stay in such a delightful and comfortable modern retreat.
