History of the Cottage:

Englishwoman Antoinette Pignon Powle built this charming cottage in the 1860s, making it one of Bruny Island's oldest homes. A single Christian lady with a literary streak, she would ride out from the house to her jobs as governess for the children of North Bruny's late 19th century gentry.

Originally named Oakchester, the house is known to locals as Mr Wisby's Cottage - when Antoinette made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she asked her neighbour to look after the house. She never returned. Her grave is in Jerusalem's Protestant cemetery.

The previous owners have lovingly restored the cottage, inside and out. Looking down on the house today, little has changed from the view Miss Powle would have seen, riding back from her day's work at Dennes Point or Barnes Bay. The cottage nestles in its valley, cleared land running up the slope to Killora Road and away to the creek that flows down to Shelter Cove.

Ten acres of cleared land surrounds the cottage and is complete with wallabies and a menagerie of associated wildlife.

With its fascinating history, attractive rural atmosphere and painstaking, sensitive restoration, this unique North Bruny property is a wonderful retreat for a romantic couple, artist or writer.
