Description
Take a breath of fresh air and step back in time. These unique stone/slab huts, located in the picturesque Moonbah Valley region of the New South Wales Snowy Mountains (15 minutes drive from the ski resort town of Jindabyne), enjoy private frontage to the Blue Ribbon declared Moonbah River - the regions most pristine trout stream - (complete with resident platypus). The Lake Hut also fronts a small private lake containing brown, brook and rainbow trout.
"Moonbah Hut looks great on the website, almost too good to be true. But guess what? It is true!! No enhanced photos. Its not so much a hut but an experience. The peace and quiet, the isolation, the fauna, the fresh air, the space to relax and escape whatever you're trying to escape. Inspirational stuff indeed. Oh and a great shower as well. Wish the place was ours but as that isn't going to happen we'll have to settle with going back again at the first opportunity. A truly wonderful part of the country. Don't hesitate, just GO!!!! Dale & Belinda
Explore the bordering Kosciuszko National Park (150 m from the Lake Hut & 0m from the River Hut).
Savor the mountain air and clear night skies with a gazillion stars - an astronomer's paradise. Go for a walk and see brumbies, wild deer, wombats, 60 plus species of birdlife.....take a picture.....paint a picture.....the scenery is breathtaking:
"Couldn't of had a more enjoyable time if we tried. Wildlife galore - the wombat down by the river was so cute - looked just like the RSPCA ad, but without the bandage! The kangas, emu and brumby harem were great. At night, who needs TV? The frogs lulled us to sleep and the cockatoos visited in the morning. Thanks Brett, we had a fantastic time & look forward to visiting again".Darren & Claire, Canberra.
If you're feeling particularly invigorated, go mountain bike riding, (Norco 24 speed suspension bikes are available for hire), or maybe take a dip in the cool, crystal clear waters of the Moonbah River.
If all this sounds a little too tiring, just sit in the rocking chair on the verandah and read a book.
The huts are very cosy (even in -15c) and the Lake Hut sleeps a maximum 4 people, ideally 2 adults and 2 young children & the River Hut a maximum 5 persons. There are 'inside' bathrooms, (no outhouses here).
Local telephone is connected, however you can make long distance calls reverse charges, if required.
The bedding is high quality.
The fishing is outstanding. Expert guiding, tuition and or fly tying, can be arranged. (Rods and all gear required, are available for hire).
Both of the hut's feature huge, stone open fireplaces and with snow on either Christmas or Boxing Day, on 6 of the past 9 years, the fireplaces can be enjoyed on most nights of the year. There is also a wood stove (and a twin electric hotplate) for cooking and a small fridge/freezer to store your catch in. All cutlery, crockery, cookware, etc is supplied.
There are few modern appliances, as the huts are very traditional - No television reception or playstations!
Moonbah Huts are the ideal and unique summer, or winter, getaways. Unfortunately Moonbah Huts are not suitable for pets.
Prices for the Lake Hut range from $345-$675 per night & the River Hut from $445-$875 per night, depending on time of year, number of guests and duration of stay.
Minimum 2 night stay.
The Huts have hosted the Channel 7 Sunrise program & Channel 9's The Living Room and have featured in numerous national and international magazines.

"Ratrace Escape" If you want a true escape from Wifi , phones and internet , then this place is for you. We were relaxed from the minute we got there. Open fire , mountain air and a beautiful river flowing nearby. What more could you ask for.

"Absolutely loved staying at the Moonbah River Hut!" Lovely, quiet and secluded. The Moonbah Hut was the perfect place for us to relax and unwind. Warm and comfortable, the Hut was a bit of luxury with views of the river and cows. An open fire and a red wine. Happy days!

Amazingly beautiful and peaceful spot - the perfect place to get away from the chaos of city life. Only spent 2 nights but felt much longer thanks to a very cozy cabin and comfortable bed. Much use was made of the multiple fireplaces and lovely Buster provided friendly company for the bush walks through unspoiled bush land. Many thanks again Brett. Was a pleasure meeting you.
