Stunning place!

Named after the nearby Chinamans waterhole in the Ovens River, Chinaman’s Kilnhouse reflects the close association between early Chinese settlement and the Ovens and Buckland Valleys. This kilnhouse was completed in 2009 and sits well away from the original kilnhouse in a separate paddock on the farm. It features a single kiln and and is easily recognized by the distinctive “Chinese hat” perched on top of the kiln. This kiln design was adapted by the architect Sally Draper from those located a few kilometers away at Eurobin, where the Pan Look family grew hops and tobacco for many years after originally migrating from China in the 1890s. Chinaman’s Kilnhouse was built by Craig Martin using a combination of recycled and new materials. The recycled materials include tin sourced from elsewhere on the farm and an outdoor concrete table, sourced from the Dal Bosco family, an Italian family who farmed this property prior to the Cavedon family.

With stunning architectural and design features, the single kiln living space has a soaring ceiling, elegantly lined with pale washed timber. It has views of Mt Buffalo on one side, an internal (hutong style) courtyard on another and a panorama that includes snow capped Mt Feathertop. The interior has been elegantly and thoughtfully designed by interior designer Russell Grainger, with no design aspect left to chance. Chinaman’s kilnhouse is modern, light, sophisticated and luxurious.

Chinaman’s Kilnhouse accommodates up to 4 people. It features one light-filled kiln living space, with a sunny window seat providing imposing views of Mt Buffalo, and a vista of the Ovens Valley and the snow tipped mountains beyond. For winter, there is a wood fire, heated polished concrete floors and storage for ski gear. For summer, louvres catch the breeze, and, if needed, air conditioning keeps the house cool. Two outdoor eating and relaxing areas are formed by the courtyard and the wrap around verandah. The main bedroom has a king sized bed, and floor to ceiling windows provide views of Mt Buffalo. The second bedroom has 2 single beds that combine to form a king size bed. There is a separate spacious bathroom and shower room. The kitchen is comprehensively equipped for gourmet cooking, and the laundry has a dryer and front loading washing machine. Chinaman’s Kilnhouse has wireless internet, an iPod dock, CD player, television and DVD player.
