Directions

Arrival Directions:

Getting to our property is your responsibility. We are not responsible for road closures, flight changes or government restrictions.

Our peace and privacy are protected by 4km of winding narrow gravel road. You do not need four wheel drive but please drive carefully, watching out for wildlife.

From Hobart city centre, follow Davey Street to the A6 Southern Outlet. Follow the signs to Huonville, crossing 3 big hills, until you arrive in the Huon Valley at the village named Grove (petrol, basic groceries etc).
Continuing on the A6, go 2.5km south from Grove. Look for the blue and yellow “Huon Bush Retreats” signs at the C619 turnoff towards Judbury. Drive 4km to Ranelagh.
Follow the “Huon Bush Retreats” sign by turning right, then immediately left, following the C619 North Huon Road. Continue 2.5km and look for the “Huon Bush Retreats 400m>” sign. 400 m after this sign, turn right into Browns Road.
Now on the gravel road, there are lots of animals from mid afternoon, so please drive slowly. It’s 3km of narrow, winding gravel road to the front gate, then 1km to reception. One section is steep with concrete on the steepest parts. Use first gear and drive at a steady speed (20-30km/h). Do not stop on the hill.

A True Retreat

We live up to our name as a bush retreat. End of valley privacy is protected by 4km winding gravel road, steep in sections. You do not need 4WD but you do need to be comfortable driving on gravel roads.

Eco-friendly facilities include carbon neutral wood heating, natural water and composting toilets. Electricity is 12-volt solar, there is no 240 volt electricity. Phones and cameras can be charged at reception. A CD player and radio is provided. Rooms are free from technology such as TV, WiFi, phones, aircon, electric blankets, microwaves and hairdryers. Most Telstra and Optus mobile phones work fine. Water comes from natural sources. We do not add any chemicals. The water might be tannin stained. Each cabin and the camp kitchen are equipped with sub-micron filters that the manufacturers say remove 99.99% of all known organisms.

You will be surrounded by wildlife of all sorts, including birds, mammals, arthropods and reptiles. Animals do sometimes enter the cabins and tipees (Arachnophobes and Allergics might prefer a city hotel).

If this eco-experience sounds good to you, read on. If you would prefer conventional town based accommodation, you can find lots of choices elsewhere.

"Stunning views, wildlife and so peaceful." We were so lucky on our 2 week holiday in Tassie to stumble across this beautiful eco friendly accommodation 10 minutes from Huonville in the bush.We stayed only 1 night( 2 nights would of been perfect) to really check out the property as there is walking tracks and a waterfall. Each accommodation has it's own space, and you feel like you have escaped. We saw plenty of birds, possums and wallabies. Beautiful views from the verandah and the cottage itself was perfect in size, layout with a fireplace which was needed especially for us from North Queensland.Very homely and a relaxing experience.Thanks.

"Comfortable and secluded" We were looking to stay somewhere secluded but comfortable. Huon Bush Retreats achieved both - we felt that we were surrounded by the beautiful Tasmanian wilderness, but our cabin had everything we needed. Highlights included the walk up to Mount Misery, which starts from the site - we didn't encounter anyone else (except for at the base of the walk) and the scenery varies quite a bit as the walk goes up through the tree line; and of course the pademelons - an adult who seemed to hang out at our cabin, and an orphaned baby that Paul was looking after. The cabin was very comfortable, with a very good bed and good self-catering facilities. There were also some useful books which helped us identify some of the wildlife we saw in the area.
