Goolwa, an historic gem.
Nestled in a majestic curve on the lower reaches of the Murray river, Goolwa has two distinct personalities. The town has a rich past in river-boat trade. Its history holds many secrets and you can loose yourself for hours exploring the winding streets and historic buildings. However Goolwa is also a coastal town that offers so many water sport activities. The Southern Ocean pounds the shores and many miles of untouched ocean beaches.
Sip great coffee in an excellent variety of cafes whilst you watch the kite surfers at the beach or sailing boats on the river. Cycle along the bike track to explore neighbouring coastal villages or learn to surf at Kingo Surfing.
Take an historic walk through the town and museums, visit the old bakery for a tasty treat or take a trip on a paddle steamer. Drive to the Goolwa barrage where the river meets the ocean, the surrounding area is a birder's paradise. Seek out adventure at the Murray Mouth and discover a world of giant sand hills and no horizons in the Coorong. Take a quiet drive inland and sample wines at local cellar doors.
