In 1923, gold prospector John Campbell Miles camped by the banks of the Leichhardt River and stumbled upon one of the world's richest copper, silver, lead and zinc ore bodies and called his discovery "Mount Isa" after the stories he had heard of the Mount Ida goldfield in Western Australia.

Riversleigh Fossil Centre educates and interprets the fossils extracted from the nearby Riversleigh fossil fields, which are among the richest and most extensive in the world.
Spectacular Lake Moondarra, just 20 kms north of Mount Isa, is popular with locals and tourists alike for swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing and offers excellent barramundi fishing for anglers.
