Just for two.....this bush cabin with a TreeHouse feel, was built around a series of 'hand me down' windows & timbers, with an indoor/outdoor living concept in mind .... ideal for those with a love of ‘glamping camping' ...... set back & up from the waters edge, in a grove of established native bush…........ there is an approx. 150m uphill walk from the waters edge…NOTE this is a steepish bush track , but well worth the hike if you like the images!!!

the location offers a unique experience for a few days away from the fast lane……

this is a minimalistic space but offers more than just the basics

bar point is boat access only there are no roads in to this riverside community so travel needs to be planned but that becomes part of the adventure!

Travel to & from the shack is by  WATER TAXI  [ available 7 days also after sunset ] or  by  RIVERBOAT POSTMAN  [ can be used to arrive  mon-thur or depart mon - fri ; one run only, from Brooklyn 10am; from the shack 11am]  Price Guideline :- water taxi approx $100 per trip for two ; riverboat postman approx $50 per trip for two

the kitchen & living space are interconnected to the rear terrace where an outdoor fire is built into the hillside…the deep set eaves reach nearly out to the fire so the area becomes part of the lounge
....... rather than doors between the lounge & the rear fireside deck, there is a series of Japanese blinds that drop down if required..
but the concept is to enjoy the space as one, without dropping the blinds…this works very well as the rear area is very sheltered in most weather conditions
....blinds are also used in the galley/kitchen area as you will see in the images..sometimes, dropping the blinds by the sink becomes necessary on stormy/windy nights
..... the shack is small, yet offers many differing views & places to simply be

is essentially an outdoor space, built below the overhanging eaves of the living & the bedroom structures ......
yet here all is in place for those with a love of cooking

long stainless steel working bench, double stainless sink, 2 electric hot plates, hooded gas BBQ, wood fire, portable gas burner, small oven & 2 below counter bar fridges german carbon knives, stainless bowls, utensils, stainless & cast iron pots, hand blender, bamboo steam baskets, mini food processor, milk frother, coffee plunger, italian coffee brewer, shelves are well stocked with oils, vinegars, mustards, asian & european sauces & condiments, salts, pepper, teas , coffee, sugar, glad wrap, paper towel, baking paper, foil, back up flours & grains
candles, matches, personal repellants, mosquito coils etc…so no need to bring the whole supermarket in your back pack
there are sealed storage boxes for non refrigerated food the rest of the galley is open shelf design

all is in place if you would like to set a beautiful table with candles, fabric napkins, big wine glasses, serving platters & white crockery there is no formal dining table but the galley bar counter is a favourite spot to eat as it is close to the fire the 'hand me down' workshed table in the lounge is another lovely spot as is the outdoor front deck table

the bedroom space can be fully closed when needed glass doors open to a private front deck set under a shady native ash tree....a favourite with the king parrots as well as guests the built in corner double bed w italian two way ceiling fan above, is the most perfect place to relax in the filtered afternoon light, feather mattress topper, cotton sheets , feather dyvet & summer quilt...... both feather & latex pillows.....are all in place for a comfortable nights sleep, electric blanket can be turned on for a few hours on cool nights, thermostat portable fan heater is perfect for chilly mornings
all linen, hand towels, shower mat provided...BYO shower towels, a band of high windows, all 'hand me downs' from local houses, allows light to stream in from all sides, the alcove leading to the front deck also has a glass ceiling
making this room a wonderful space from dawn to dusk, if you are looking for a bedroom with blackout facilies, then this is not for you
although light, the sun itself does not reach the shack bedroom till latish morning, so it is a lovely space for a sleep in

behind the bedroom is the ensuite shower & toilet, also here the outdoor is embraced with primarily glass free windows.....
the fan heater does get used to take the chill off the bathroom air on winter mornings there is a very large eco shower head in the shower recess
the shower is fed by a rainwater low pressure tank so a soft & gentle experience, shampoo, conditioner , soaps provided

light weight cane chairs can be moved around to follow the light, hammock hooks are set between the trees, it is a hammock for two
old jack & jill table chair set w shade umbrella, low lying sun lounge, mosquito coils, citronella lanterns & candles

there is no cleaning surcharge added on, but we therefore ask you to leave 'The Shiela Shack' neat , tidy & things back in place as you found it...

as there is no council garbage service so we also ask that you take all garbage with you & place in bins located at the mainland wharf

Due to lack of fences & consideration to neighbours , dogs are generally not able to come along ...however we can make an exception for placid dogs that just like to laze around, do not bark, wander or jump on furniture

bluetooth rechargable portable speaker w 15 hrs battery play...take your music to the waters edge!!!
I Pad w Spotify playlists
yoga mats, blocks & bolsters
books & magazines
a few board games & puzzles

2 x fishing rods, bucket, fish knife, board
BYO hooks, bait & sinkers
lights on the 'congo' jetty ensure an excellent spot for both daytime & evening fishing …
best fishing is on the high tide
please clean fish by the waters edge and leave the jetty clean

the current is very strong in this part of the river, but on the still of the high tide ( & at no other time ), the jetty pontoon is a great place jump in…at own resposibility

the mangrove foreshore vegetation is a treasure trove of subject matter for those with a love of drawing or photography

Bar Point is a settlement of approx. 200 houses /weekenders of varying shapes & sizes
kalinda road, a narrow grass track, just below the shack runs along the western reach joining the foreshore track nearer the point
the foreshore reserve extends approx. 3km from western end to eastern end …
from the shack this takes approx. 45 minutes as a round trip stroll
walking south towards the point the foreshore bush track opens to a clearing...
here a narrow sealed path leads down to a flat area with table/ bench by the waters edge…a lovely spot in the late afternoon light
further along on the southern tip at the end of the clearing, another sealed track leads down to the public wharf & mailshed ….
here the local mail is dropped off Mon - Fri around 11am by the river boat postman
the mailbag hanging in shed is then taken away by the mailboat for next day postal delivery to the mainland......
there is also one of those rare payphones at the mailshed!!!!
the path turns into a narrower bush track on the Eastern side finishing at a low lying clearing just by the rocky gully …

Bar Point backs on to the steep terrain of Popran National Park
there are no walking/hiking trails into here & we do not recommend exploring up the back of the shack

apart from enjoying the sunset from the shack, the jetty with a cool drink gives you a panoramic vista of this part of the river, while the light is at its optimum
there is an aerial image uploaded which gives you a sense of the wilderness the river presents in this area

you probably need to walk to mailshed to pick up Telstra tower & signal....
there is some Optus signal at the shack, which improves as you get to the congo jetty
generally optus texts are fine at shack

arrival is generally after 4pm....but if you have a chance to arrive earlier in the day , perhaps kick back and enjoy a lunch at Estuary, Kangaroo Point...this licensed restaurant offers great views of the river..there is a wharf for guest pick up, directly below....
another favourite is LifeBoat Seafoods, 1 McKell Park, in downtown Brooklyn, just a 3 km from Mooney Mooney..this is the local fish coop outlet so very delicious fish & chips are served can perhaps pick up some fresh prawns for later on..
these and a couple of other spots nearby, are listed on the map below if you just zoom in to Brooklyn

if you let us know at time of booking, we can generally arrange to have delicious, easy to heat/bake/finish off dinners & brunches stocked in fridge prior to arrival

Peats Bite Restaurant is a great long lunch destination just across the river
with sensational views up the river
a relaxed approach to a long lunch
family owner operators are also singers so a festive atmosphere tends to evolve during the day
guests often take a nap on the lawn between courses
boat access only
so arrival in sea planes, big boats, little boats as well as their own transfer vessel
pre booking essential
book your pick up & drop off from the jetty when confirminng table
$130 pp

Peats Bite is the most accessable option for lunch when staying at Bar Point....
Water taxi costs & distance unfortunately make Berowra Waters Inn & Cottage Point Inn unsuitable options

the final leg of your travel is by boat - making this location especially unique!! ............arrival & departure is by pre booked water taxi ( 7 days ) from Mooney Mooney or Kangaroo Point just next to M1 Freeway Bridge......OR by riverboat postman ( mon-fri )

bar point is boat access only there are no roads in to this riverside community so travel needs to be planned but that becomes part of the adventure!

it is one hour by car from the sydney harbour bridge to the closest road access locations, just off the M1 freeway by the hawkesbury river bridge
do allow an xtra 30min travel time in peak hour.
you exit the freeway just after having crossed the river...hawkesbury river interchange/ mooney mooney/brooklyn exit
....the best meeting spot is the mooney mooney boat ramp pontoon.....take the first left off the freeway which is peats ferry rd..that takes you to derrubin reserve and the boat ramp; which you can actually see to your left as you cross the bridge

the last part of the journey is by boat - see below

it is a 1hr train journey on the intercity northern line
from central sydney station to hawkesbury river station in brooklyn
allow an additional 40mins for airport train & platform changes
the best option is 9.45am arrival at hawkesbury river station
the 10am riverboat postman cruise leaves from brooklyn wharf, just 100m from station
then i will meet you approx 11.15 when mailboat gets to Bar Point
this is a great way to get a feel for life on the river today, along with an excellent commentary filled with historical info......
buses operate from hawkesbury river train station to kangaroo point..
a 10 min bus trip
mon - fri 15:14, 15:55, 16:25, 17:07, 17:08, 17:40, 18:08
sat 09:47, 15:48
just ask the driver to drop you at the Kangaroo point turn is only a few minutes walk down to the kangaroo point wharf
you will then travel by boat to Bar Point

if arriving by car, we generally meet at the Mooney Mooney boat ramp, Peats Ferry Rd, as there is the best parking....
if arriving by train & not taking the mailboat, then kangaroo point is the best place for you to get to by the local bus, as per info above
from mooney mooney / kangaroo point the boat journey is approx . 15mins depending on the conditions
pick up time is generally after 4pm, but we do attempt to fit in with you as well...

at the 'congo' wharf at Bar Point, we will show you the way to the shack
& run through a few pointers.....then its time for you to simply enjoy

we can then be contacted by text message during your stay
